"Keep boys who are enamored of you in the palm of your hand. Then, when they become good men, make them your lovers."
Kurata Misako got married when she was very young (to a complete yet adorable fool). Soon after her wedding, she was told by her doctor she could not have children and became very depressed. But when her marriage fell apart, she decided to change herself and become a writer. She started by getting an eccentric hair style to go with her new self, and when she went skipping merrily through town with her new look, she found baby Sana abandoned on a park bench. She was overjoyed to have the opportunity to care for her and adopted her as soon as she got the chance.
Mama's unique personality is probably what we owe Sana's free spirit to (I don't think she could be anyone else's child). Mama is very eccentric but has very clear view of reality, and it seems that the consequences of her naiveté as a young woman have made her very wise. Mama always speaks the truth straight out, and she doesn't limit Sana's personality in any way. That's probably why she likes Hayama's direct and unceremonious personality (I'd say he's a lot like her in that respect). Chances are she'd love to see Sana and Hayama together (after all, she encourages him to pursue Sana the first time she meets him and is subjected to "the Hayama look").
Mama is a famous award-winning writer, and her hobbies include wearing extravagant head dresses to house her pet squirrel, Maro-chan, and torturing her editor, Onda-san. And she likes to ride around the house in a little car. ^_^
